This soft headband and mitts set in multiple sizes knits up quickly in DK yarn to fit just about any family member, from toddler to adult. Worked entirely in knit and purl stitches with simple shaping, these subtle pieces offer a sculpted, no-slip fit. For maximum warmth and minimum weight, choose a softly spun yarn composed of fine, springy fibers.  Substituting yarn and/or needles may result in an overall variation in size. 

Gauge:

  • ear warmer: 25 sts and 38 rows = 4 inches in stockinette (knit flat; unblocked)
  • mitts: 26 sts and 40 rows = 4 inches in stockinette (knit flat; unblocked)

Finished Measurements:

  • ear warmer: 12.5(14, 15.5, 16.5)[18, 19.5, 21, 22, 23.5] inches in circumference to fit heads measuring up to 16(17.5, 19, 20)[21.5, 23, 24.5, 25.5, 27] inches around
  • mitts: 4.5(5, 5.5)[6, 7, 8, 9) [inches in circumference to fit hands up to 5(5.5, 6)[7, 8, 9, 10) inches around palm. Note: children’s sizes are denoted by (parens) while youth/adult sizes appear in [brackets]

Materials Used:

  • ear warmer: 65(75, 90, 100)[110, 125, 135, 145, 160] yards
  • mitts: 100(125, 150)[175, 200, 225, 250] yards of any soft sport yarn that knits to pattern gauge Needle

Size:

  • ear warmer: size 4US (3.5mm) 16-inch circular needle or DPNs (best for smallest sizes) 
  • mitts: DPNs size 3US (3.25mm) for body and size 2.5US (3.0 mm) for cuff and trims
